4.500: INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN COMPUTING

FALL 2019

The objective of 4.500 is to expose students to different strategies and techniques relevant to digital fabrication. This includes both replicating and designing objects in a 3D-CAD environment (in this case, Rhino), as well as considering how a 3D model might be turned into a real-life object. We began with small-scale 3D-printed models before transitioning to the design of a full-sized plywood chair. Finally, an integral part of the assignment was learning how to render our designs in a digital space.

"Study, analyse, and replicate a famous chair design."

I chose the Shell Chair, by Wegner.

"Design and fabricate a functioning chair that can withstand the weight of a 200lb human being. Good luck."
